SAWA Signs Purchase Agreement and Launches Biochar Trial

Date: July 30, 2024

Location: Jakarta, Indonesia

SAWA EcoSolutions is pleased to announce the signing of a purchase agreement and the launch of a biochar trial aimed at addressing climate change and reducing the rising costs of fertilizers. This initiative reflects SAWA’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices and environmental stewardship.

Purpose of the Biochar Trial

The biochar trial is driven by two key concerns: the increasing impact of climate change and the soaring costs of traditional fertilizers. Biochar, a stable form of carbon-rich organic material produced through the pyrolysis of agricultural waste, offers a promising solution. It enhances soil health, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, and sequesters carbon, thus helping to mitigate climate change.

Farmland Details

Kresna Gama Mulia, SAWA’s partner, currently manages 50 hectares of farmland, cultivating crops such as cassava, corn, and chili. The biochar trial will initially be conducted on 4 hectares. This effort aligns with SAWA’s mission to convert agricultural waste into valuable resources, promoting sustainable farming practices and long-term food security.

Agreement Signing and Photo Session

The signing ceremony for the purchase agreement marked the official start of the biochar trial. This milestone was commemorated with a photo session, capturing the enthusiasm and commitment of all parties involved.

Next Steps

  • Monitor Biochar Trial Outcome: The trial will begin on 1 hectare of land, divided into four plots. Each plot will receive varying percentages of biochar: 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The effectiveness of each application rate will be closely monitored over time to assess improvements in soil health and crop yield.

  • Yield Monitoring: Typical crop yields are expected within 6-8 months. However, it is anticipated that the use of biochar will accelerate growth and enhance productivity.

  • Site Visit: A visit to the farmland in Lampung Utara will be arranged for content creation and documentation purposes. This will provide an opportunity to observe the trial’s progress and gather insights for further development.

Phil Rickard, CEO of SAWA EcoSolutions, stated, "The biochar trial represents a significant step towards sustainable agriculture in Indonesia. By reducing reliance on traditional fertilizers and improving soil health, we aim to support our farmers and contribute to global climate action."
