Daur Ulang Kotoran Ayam Jadi Katalis Ramah Lingkungan? Inovasi Hijau dari Biochar Magnetik

When we talk about green chemistry, one of its core principles is reducing waste and reusing materials that are often considered “trash.” In today’s industrial and scientific world, turning waste into valuable resources is a smart move—both environmentally and economically.

One fascinating breakthrough comes from biochar made from chicken manure—yes, the material many consider disgusting can actually be transformed into a sophisticated, eco-friendly catalyst!

From Chicken Manure to Biochar: The First Step Toward a Green Solution

In this innovation, chicken manure is processed through pyrolysis—a heating process without oxygen—to create nanoparticle biochar: a carbon-rich material with an extremely porous surface. This biochar is then magnetized with nickel particles, allowing it to be easily separated and recycled using a simple magnet.

Next, its surface is modified with a dithizone ligand, and it’s used to stabilize the metal catalyst ruthenium (Ru). The resulting eco-friendly catalyst is named:Ru-dithizone@biochar-Ni MNPs — a reusable green catalyst with promising potential.

Why Magnetic?

A common issue with nano-catalysts is the difficulty in separating them after a reaction. Their small size makes conventional filtration methods ineffective. But by making the catalyst magnetic, it can be easily “pulled out” of a solution using an external magnet—fast, efficient, and clean.

This is what makes this nickel-based magnetic biochar special: it doesn’t just act as a catalyst—it’s easily recyclable and maintains its performance even after multiple uses.

Real-World Application: Chemical Reactions in Water, Not Toxic Solvents

Important chemical reactions like carbon–carbon (C–C) coupling—used in drug development, active ingredients, and advanced materials—usually require expensive catalysts like palladium and toxic solvents.

In this greener approach, the ruthenium-based catalyst operates without phosphine ligands or harmful solvents. Instead, all reactions are carried out in water—a safe, cheap, and recyclable medium. Even better, the reaction products are water-insoluble, making purification much simpler and more efficient.

Key Advantages of This Innovation:

✅ Converts waste into valuable resources, especially abundant chicken manure

✅ Environmentally friendly—no toxic solvents used

✅ Easily separated and reused, thanks to magnetic properties

✅ More affordable and sustainable—no reliance on costly metals like palladium

✅ Wide potential applications across chemical, pharmaceutical, and materials industries

Bridging Science and Sustainability

This innovation proves that organic waste like chicken manure can be turned into high-value industrial catalysts. By incorporating green chemistry principles—such as using water as a solvent and enabling magnetic recovery—this technology serves as a real-world example of sustainable science in action.

A small step from the chicken coop could bring a big impact for a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable industrial future.
